It can be hard to know where to look when you are looking for sustainable shopping resources, which is why I compiled a list of my favorite places to shop sustainably for books online.
Books are extremely easy to shop sustainably, but you might have never given it a thought when you picked out you latest read. No problem because I have all the best resources for sustainable book buying covered. Books are an area of my life where I tend to consume the most. I read a lot and I love to find new books whenever I have the chance.
Of course, the most sustainable solution is minimize consumption so if you can, try utilizing your local library. However sometimes the waitlists are long or if you are looking to add a favorite book to your own personal library, secondhand book shopping is definitely the way to go. Your local bookstore might have a used book section and if you can, shop from there. If you can’t find what you want locally, here are some great online companies that have transparent sustainability and literacy programs integrated into their business. A win-win for everyone!
My favorite places to shop sustainably for books online
Better World Books
One of my favorite online bookstores is Better World Books. They have a great selection, usually prices are $3-$8 for used paperbacks and shipping is quick due to multiple warehouse locations. The have a literacy program to help provide support to those who need it and never throw any books away. All books are properly recycled if not able to be sold. Also, you all know I am a sucker for good marketing. Check out this email they send to their customers after you place an order. They even personalize it based on the location your books are coming from. They truly know the way to a book lover’s heart!
Thriftbooks
Usually I find if Better World doesn’t have a book I am looking for, Thriftbooks does!
They also sell new books which is convenient you can get everything in one place if needed.
Half Price Books
Half Price Books is another huge inventory website that has a large music, movie and gift-able inventory. They also have themed grab bags for $10, which if you love surprises like me, is an irresistibly fun way to order books!
AbeBooks
AbeBooks is known for specialty items and collectible books. If you are looking for a specific edition, signed copy or related literary item like vintage letters or magazines, AbeBooks is the trusted resource for that! They have a large inventory and it is fun to browse their site for bookish related items.
Collectively, Karmen
